When should you block someone on Twitter?

As much as I would like to say that everyone on Twitter cares about everyone else, you probably already know that isn’t true. Not only don’t they care, many of them are not even real. For those of us who have been using Twitter for years, this is not new news but if you are new to the platform or only dabbled before, you might wonder what to do with the spammers.

The Basic Rules for Following on Twitter:

  1. First of all, you don’t have to follow everyone who follows you. Some people will tell you that this is the way to build numbers but numbers are not always the best way to grow true relationships. Choose who you want to follow. Every tweet you push out can attract odd followers. Yesterday I was talking about how I shared my photos with Twitpic using both my PC and Windows Phone and this morning in my new followers is Appdealswp who represents apps for Windows Phones. Keywords will bring you followers but not necessarily the ones you planned.
  2. Does the person have a photo? I know some people are camera shy but really? If you want to be on social media, you need to have a photo. The standard egg on Twitter brands you as a newbie or worse, a bot.
  3. Look at the stream, if you see the same thing repeated over and over whether or not there is a photo, it probably means it is a bot or at least someone who is clueless about how Twitter works.

When to block someone?

When you see a continuous stream of the same thing, it is time to block and report them. It crowds the stream and frankly it is just annoying. Whether is is walmart gift cards or an IPad giveaway, if it sounds too good to be true, just block and report. People (or bots) can appear in your stream even if you never followed them. If they use your name, you will see them.

Be careful who you block and report because it will eventually lead to their account being suspended. Twitter checks for these types of accounts anyway and they do get blocked by Twitter too.

Using this strategy will decrease the annoying accounts that bother you much better than setting your status to protected tweets which will decrease your opportunity to enjoy Twitter.

If by chance, you were thinking about using bot-like, mass broadcasting strategies on Twitter, don’t! As you can guess, you might be the one blocked if you do.

There are actually a lot of followers that don’t follow theirs maybe because they don’t know them personally…

It’s hard to know everyone personally. A strategy of interaction would change how valuable the followers become. I find that people I talk to on Twitter about genuine topics, generally also talk back.

Totally agree with your points. Sometimes it totally becomes nuisance when you find the same thing repeating constantly that too in just couple of seconds. phew…people to need to learn to be good twitters which help them build their identity and earn more. :)

Generally, the same thing repeated means it is a bot. Occasionally, as you say, it is a person who has not learned the best practices in Twitter and is using it to spam others.

Location tracking coupled with apps like Twitter or FourSquare do make stalking possible. You can turn those options off.

If twitter used properly then it definitely help you to increase traffic and get potential customers but when misused your account will be dismissed.

One of the most ingenious aspects of Twitter is that if someone is annoying you or being rude, you can simply unfollow them or even block them. I have blocked my fair share of people, and most of the time I’ve done it without giving it a second thought.

It is important to know the people who you follow, because some of them may be stalkers who may be up to no good. I do not see why you should just follow everyone unless you share something in common.

Twitter is a social networking site that allows its users to share what they are doing or thinking about in short, 140-character messages, known as “tweets.” They also have the option to block this information from certain people they don’t want to see it. Blocking users removes your tweets from their Twitter feeds, although your tweets are still visible if they go to your Twitter page, unless you have a private account..

    • Julie Walraven
      April 17, 2013 | 6:20 am

Yes, good point about visibility. You can’t use Twitter like texting one person because it can be seen by the world.

But you miss some great opportunities by only following people you know. For me, Twitter has given me connections with people all around the world and I am grateful for that experience. Many of those I have turned into Skype chats and potential clients.

It is very important to be categorical on who to follow and not to follow, especially if you are famous. I remember a while back Nicki Minaj had to bring down her twitter account because someone was leaking her songs. There could be cases that are even more adverse than that.

    September 1, 2012 | 10:33 am

I am so categorical when it comes on who to follow, but it is hard to choose who to follow you because anyone can. So I think the best thing to do is share as little as possible and avoid sharing crucial information.
